We are at week 10! This week, I would like to dive into some unreleased songs that I think are worth the listen. Before we dive into that, I would like to thank everyone for reading these posts! I know it’s sometimes irritating to listen to me rambling about another song by the same artist, but if anyone has listened to the songs that I have mentioned here, I hope you enjoyed them. I also know that some of Lana’s songs may seem kind of repetitive and cover similar topics, I truly do think that her songs are all worth the listen.
That being said, lets dive into the main questions: why does Lana have so many unreleased songs? Actually, it is pretty common for artists to have so many unreleased songs. When working on an album, singers have the tendency to record good songs, but not include them in the album because it either doesn’t fit the mood of the album or is simply not the correct time to release it. We also have to remember that music is these artists’ lives, and any emotions or large events in their lives are reflected through music. The main reason that Lana is known to have so many unreleased songs is unfortunately because of hacking. On multiple occasions, there have been cyber-attacks (by both strangers and super-fans) on her devices, leading to so many of her unreleased songs to be published on platforms like SoundCloud. Her previous artist names, including May Jailor, Lizzy Grant, and Sparkle Jump Rope Queen, have also contributed to the large amount of songs that are unofficially on these platforms. Regardless of there being so many out there, I too have my favorites.
The first song I want to touch on is “You Can Be The Boss”, which is a song that was supposed to be on Born to Die. It is an alluring song about her encounter and/or experience with a man who was basically her type. Apart from its impact on the fanbase, the song was a huge hit on Tumblr.
The second song is “Kinda Outta Luck”, another “almost” for Born to Die. This song was originally discovered on SoundCloud by superfans while they were stalking her old artist names in hopes of finding something helpful. In this track, she brings out her playful side…and that’s all I’m going to say. Also, fun fact, this song was heard in an episode of Gossip Girl before. I’ve never watched the show, but I’m sure it was a hit with the fan base.
The third and final unreleased song I want to touch on is “Trash Magic”. Recorded in 2007, there’s no clear explanation to why and where this song was discovered by fans. As the name (kind of) explains, this song talked about motels, trailer parks, and Americana. Overall, it is about the commonly used phrase, “white trash”, and her experience with it. She is asking her lover to come back so they can live a simple, trailer park life together; simple, but satisfying. The “magic” talks about how much happiness a simple life brings.
Overall, thank you guys for following along this semester, and I hope I gave everyone a few new songs to listen to!
